Penile Implants
Penile Implant Options
At Wake Forest Men’s Health, Dr. Ryan Terlecki performs the highest annual volume of penile implant procedures in the state of North Carolina. An implantable penile prosthesis (IPP) is a medical device surgically implanted within the corpora cavernosa (erectile tissue) of the penis.
Men with organic or treatment-resistant erectile dysfunction due to a physical condition such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Peyronie’s disease, pelvic trauma, or prostate cancer treatment often use an implantable penile prosthesis, or penile implant, to improve their sexual performance.
There are two basic types of penile implants:
Inflatable: These implants are considered the "Gold Standard" and allow for an erection on-demand, created by body-temperature fluid, similar to natural erections. In this situation, a man's erectile chambers in the penis are lined with custom-sized inserts that fill with saline from an internal reservoir whenever rigidity is desired, and can be returned to a natural, relaxed state following sexual activity. This minimally-invasive procedure is typically done on an outpatient basis in less than an hour.
Non-inflatable: These implants are malleable in nature and allow the patient to manipulate the trajectory of the penis for sexual use whenever desired. There is no fluid to cycle, making this a potentially attractive option for men with issues related to manual dexterity.
For nearly a decade, Wake Forest Men’s Health has remained on the cutting edge of new advances in penile implants. We consistently perform the highest volume of sexual restoration procedures for men in this region, seeking to optimize their quality of life, and that of their partners.
